Zookeeper Zane is a major character and mentor from Zoo Palace and is a playable character in Toshiko Crash-Up. His in-game rival is Dr. Derwiff.

Born in the wilds of Cincinnatti, Zane is the CEO of Palace Zoos Inc., a company that gives aspiring zoo owners the key to the zoo of their dreams. With his capuchin sidekick Cheeko at his side, Zane makes sure every zoo runs ship-shape...or zoo-shape. His zookeeping methods may be unorthodox, and he may take his job to an extreme, but he manages to get the job done, everytime.

Zane's story opens as he's patrolling the zoo. As he walks past the lion exhibit, the big cat roars at Zane before he sprays it with a spray bottle to subdue it. As Zane walks, a piece of paper flies through the sky and hits Zane in the face. He looks at it and sees it is a poster for a lost animal. However, the picture of the animal is missing, being replaced by a giant gaping hole in the paper. Cheeko hops onto Zane's shoulder, chatters to him, and Zane and Cheeko head off to find the lost animal.

Name: Dr. Derwiff

Reason: As Zane wanders through the arena, he comes across Dr. Oktor Von Derwiff. Derwiff demands to know who Zane is and what he wants. Zane explains that he is looking for a small ugly creature. Derwiff infers that Zane is talking about him and becomes enraged. Zane, oblivious to Derwiff's anger, asks Derwiff to help him find the ugly creature. Derwiff fires a missile at Zane, who dodges. Zane says that if Derwiff isn't going to be helpful, he should just get out of his way.

Connection: The only real connection between Zane and Derwiff is that this is the first time either of them has been playable. They're about as far apart as possible.

After defeating The Great Mighty Spiral, Zane returns to the zoo empty-handed. He and Cheeko chatter back and forth to eachother as they walk. As the cinematic ends, Zane and Cheeko walk past an exhibit containing the broken remains of The Great Mighty Spiral.
